Google Guaranteed: What the Badge Means and How to Get It
The Google Guaranteed badge appears on local businesses that have passed Google's verification process. Here is what it means, what it costs, and how to get approved.

Search for a plumber, an HVAC company, or a pest control service on Google and you will often see a green checkmark badge next to certain business names. That badge says "Google Guaranteed." It is one of the most visible trust signals in local search — and most customers do not know exactly what it means, which is part of why it works.
This guide explains what the Google Guaranteed badge is, what Google actually checks, what it costs, and how to get it.
What Google Guaranteed means
Google Guaranteed is a verification status that Google grants to local service businesses that pass a specific set of checks. Businesses with the badge have been verified by Google for:
- Background checks on the business owner and, in many cases, employees who enter customers' homes
- License verification for trades that require licensing (electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, etc.)
- Insurance verification — proof of liability coverage at required minimums
The badge appears on Google Local Services Ads — the paid listings that appear above the local pack in search results. It cannot be purchased or added to an organic Google Business Profile listing.
When a customer sees the Google Guaranteed badge, it signals that Google has verified this is a real, licensed, insured business with background-checked staff. In an industry where customers let strangers into their homes, that matters.
What Google's guarantee actually covers
The "guarantee" part refers to Google's promise to customers — not a warranty on your work.
If a customer books a job through a Google Local Services Ad, is dissatisfied with the result, and cannot resolve it with the business, Google may reimburse the customer up to $2,000 lifetime per customer. Google investigates the claim before issuing any refund.
This is not a blank check. Google evaluates each claim. The guarantee is designed to reduce customer anxiety about hiring an unfamiliar business from search — not to make businesses liable for anything that goes wrong.
From the business perspective, this protection means customers are more willing to book you from a cold search result. The trust barrier that normally exists between a stranger on the internet and a person entering your home is partially lowered by the badge.
Which businesses are eligible
Google Guaranteed is available for home service categories including:
- Plumbers
- HVAC technicians
- Electricians
- Roofers
- Pest control
- Locksmiths
- House cleaners / maid services
- Landscapers / lawn care
- Window cleaners
- Handymen
- Water damage restoration
- Foundation and crawl space specialists
- Tree services
- Garage door services
Google regularly expands this list. If your category is not listed, check the Google Local Services Ads eligibility page — it updates periodically.
For professional services (lawyers, financial advisors, real estate agents), Google has a separate program called Google Screened with different verification requirements.
What the verification process involves
Background checks: Google works with third-party screening companies (Pinkerton and others) to run background checks on business owners. Depending on your category and state, background checks may also be required for employees who enter customer homes. Google looks for criminal history that would be disqualifying for the services being offered.
License verification: If your trade requires a license — electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pest control — Google verifies that your license is current and in good standing. You will need to upload your license documentation during the application process.
Insurance verification: You need general liability insurance at minimums set by Google for your category. You will upload your certificate of insurance. Google may contact your insurer directly to verify.
Business information: Your business name, address, phone, and website need to be consistent and accurate. Inconsistencies slow down verification.
How to apply for Google Guaranteed
- Go to ads.google.com/local-services-ads and start a new account
- Enter your business category and service area to check eligibility
- Create your business profile (name, hours, services, service area)
- Upload your license and insurance documents
- Consent to background checks for yourself and applicable employees
- Wait for verification — typically 1 to 4 weeks
Once approved, your LSA profile goes live and the Google Guaranteed badge appears on your ads.
What it costs
The Google Guaranteed badge itself is free — you earn it through the verification process. The cost comes from running the Local Services Ads that display the badge.
LSAs are pay-per-lead. You only pay when a customer contacts you through the ad (calls or messages). There is no cost just for the badge to appear.
See Google Local Services Ads Cost for a breakdown of what to expect to pay per lead by category and market.
How to maximize the badge's value
Getting verified is step one. Making the badge work for you requires:
A strong review count. Your LSA shows your star rating and review count. A business with 6 reviews gets less response than one with 60, badge or not. Build reviews consistently — review velocity matters more than total count for LSA ranking.
Fast response time. Google uses your lead response time as a ranking factor within LSAs. Businesses that respond quickly rank higher. Set up notifications so you never miss a lead.
Low dispute rate. If customers frequently dispute your leads or complain about your service, Google can lower your ranking or suspend your badge. Do good work, handle complaints directly before they escalate.
Profile completeness. Fill out your LSA profile completely: services offered, service area, photos, business description. A complete profile converts better.
Google Guaranteed vs. Google Business Profile
These are two separate things that often get confused.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is your organic presence on Google Maps. It is free, it drives local pack rankings, and it includes your reviews, photos, posts, and business information. Anyone can create one.
Your Google Guaranteed status is tied to your Local Services Ads profile. It requires verification and runs on a paid model. It appears in the LSA placement above the local pack, not in the local pack itself.
You can have a Google Business Profile without being Google Guaranteed. You can be Google Guaranteed without having an optimized Google Business Profile. But the businesses that perform best have both — a strong organic Maps presence and LSAs with the badge on top.
Start with a free audit to see where your organic presence stands before adding LSA spend.
