Google Screened: What It Is and How Professional Services Get Verified

Google Screened is Google's verification badge for professional service businesses — lawyers, financial advisors, real estate agents. Here is how it works and how to get it.

Google Screened: What It Is and How Professional Services Get Verified

Google Guaranteed gets the most attention, but there is a second verification badge that professional service businesses need to know about: Google Screened.

If you are a lawyer, a financial advisor, or a real estate agent, Google Screened is the equivalent of Google Guaranteed for your industry — and it has the same prime placement above the local pack in search results.

What Google Screened is

Google Screened is a verification status for professional service businesses that run Google Local Services Ads. Like Google Guaranteed, it appears as a badge on your LSA listing and signals to customers that Google has verified your credentials.

The key difference: Google Screened does not include the $2,000 customer satisfaction guarantee that Google Guaranteed does. The reasoning is that professional services (legal advice, financial planning) are more complex to evaluate than "did the plumber fix the pipe." Google verifies your credentials but does not backstop the quality of your professional judgment.

What the badge does signal:

  • Your professional license is verified and current
  • You and your firm have passed background checks
  • Your business is a legitimate, registered professional practice

For industries where trust is the primary sales objection, that signal moves customers.

Which professional services are eligible

Current eligible categories include:

Legal services

  • Attorneys and law firms (general)
  • Bankruptcy lawyers
  • Business lawyers
  • Contract lawyers
  • Criminal lawyers
  • Estate lawyers
  • Family lawyers
  • Immigration lawyers
  • IP lawyers
  • Labor lawyers
  • Litigation lawyers
  • Personal injury lawyers
  • Real estate lawyers
  • Tax lawyers
  • Traffic lawyers

Financial services

  • Financial planners
  • Financial advisors
  • Tax specialists

Real estate

  • Real estate agents
  • Real estate brokers

Google periodically adds new categories. Check ads.google.com/local-services-ads for the current full list.

What Google Screened verification involves

Professional license check: Google verifies that your professional license (law license, financial advisor registration, real estate license) is current and in good standing in the states where you practice.

Background check: Business owners and, depending on category, key employees go through background screening. This is run by third-party firms Google partners with.

Business verification: Your business registration, address, and contact information are confirmed.

Malpractice insurance: Some categories require proof of professional liability (malpractice) insurance.

The verification process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Delays are usually caused by incomplete documentation or licensing database lag.

How Google Screened ads appear

Google Screened badges appear on LSA listings in search results above the local pack. They show:

  • Business or firm name
  • Badge: blue checkmark labeled "Google Screened"
  • Star rating and review count
  • Phone number and message button
  • Years in business (optional)

The placement and format is the same as Google Guaranteed. The badge color and label differ — Screened is blue, Guaranteed is green.

On mobile, these ads dominate the top of the page. For competitive professional service searches, they are often the first 3 results a user sees before any organic content.

Why reviews matter for Google Screened

Your review count and rating appear directly in your Screened ad. This is not optional — it is baked into the format.

A law firm with 8 reviews and a 4.2 rating competes differently than one with 94 reviews and a 4.8 rating. The badge gets you into the placement. The reviews determine whether you get the call.

Building reviews for professional services requires different tactics than home services. Clients may be reluctant to publicly discuss legal or financial matters. Strategies that work:

  • Request reviews for matters that concluded positively and non-sensitively
  • Focus on experience reviews ("they were responsive, professional, explained everything clearly") rather than case-specific ones
  • Make the review request process frictionless — a direct link texted immediately after a positive interaction
  • Review platforms beyond Google (Avvo for lawyers, specific financial advisor directories) contribute to your overall reputation even if they don't appear in the LSA

When Google Screened makes sense for your practice

It makes sense when:

  • You are in an eligible category
  • Your average client value is high enough to absorb $50 to $200+ per lead
  • You respond quickly to inbound inquiries — LSA ranking weighs responsiveness heavily
  • You have at least 15 to 20 reviews to compete credibly
  • Your intake process converts inbound calls at a reasonable rate

It may not make sense when:

  • Your practice area is highly specialized and your clients come from referrals, not search
  • You cannot respond to leads within minutes — unresponsive LSA profiles rank poorly
  • Your budget is better spent on content and organic search for complex, research-intensive searches (estate planning, M&A, regulatory matters)

The organic foundation still matters

Like Google Guaranteed for home services, Google Screened works best when your organic presence is already solid.

When a potential client sees your Screened ad and calls, the first thing many of them do is check your Google Business Profile, your firm website, or your reviews on other platforms. A thin profile with few reviews or an outdated website creates friction at exactly the wrong moment.

Get the organic foundation right first — Google Business Profile optimized, reviews building consistently, website clear about your practice areas and differentiators. Then add Screened LSAs to capture the top of page placement.

A free audit shows you where your current organic visibility stands and what to fix before investing in LSA spend.
