The Long Table
From $165 / guestThree courses down the middle on platters. A whole roasted fish or a braise, six vegetable dishes that change with the month, bread from the house. The one most couples book.

Hudson Valley · The Hamptons · Since 2014
Family-style wedding catering for 40 to 240. One long table, platters down the middle, and a kitchen that treats your reception the way it would treat a dinner for twelve.

Then it is set

For five years Aster & Fern did what every caterer in the valley does: a choice of two entrees, plated off a hot line in a tent, a hundred and fifty covers in eleven minutes. It was competent. Guests ate what they were served, at the temperature it arrived, and talked to the person on their left.
Then we catered a wedding for a family who insisted on one table and platters, because that is how they ate at home. The room was louder. People stood up to pass things. The couple ate. We have not plated a wedding since, and we turn down the ones that want it.
The room was louder. People stood up to pass things. The couple ate.
We do not run buffets and we do not plate two hundred covers off a hot line. Everything goes down the middle of the table on platters, and it is set the way this one is. Tap through the parts.

Tap a point
Unscented tapers, lit at the moment the sun drops below the ridge, which we look up for your date. Nothing scented goes near a dinner table.
A wedding is decided months out, in a kitchen, over a plate. Here is what happens between that afternoon and yours.

The venue package will be cheaper. The hotel will be simpler. This is what you get for choosing neither, said plainly.

From the couples
We had a hundred and sixty people at one table in a greenhouse and every single one of them was served at the same moment. My father, who has been to a lot of weddings, said he had never seen that happen.
The tasting was the best meal of the engagement. We changed one dish. The wedding tasted exactly like that afternoon, which I did not believe was possible for two hundred people.
Our planner said the kitchen was the calmest she had worked with in nine years. I did not see the kitchen. I saw the food arrive, all at once, and then I saw the team in the room, refilling platters, for the rest of the night.
No. Everything is family style, on platters, served to every table at the same time. If your venue or your guest count needs a buffet, we will say so on the first call and point you to two caterers who do it well.
Saturdays from May through October go nine to fourteen months out. We hold a handful of dates back for shorter notice, so ask. Off-season and Friday or Sunday dates are usually open within four months.
Food, the tasting, the full service team for the day, setup and teardown, and coordination with your planner and florist on the table plan. Not included: rentals, alcohol, cake and gratuity. We tell you what rentals typically run for your count before you commit to anything.
Yes. Most of our weddings are in barns, greenhouses and fields. We bring a mobile kitchen and need a level 20 by 20 foot area, a water hookup within a hose run, and power for refrigeration. We call the venue and confirm all three ourselves.
Separate dishes, not the main dish with something removed. We ask for restrictions at the tasting and confirm each one two weeks out. For severe allergies, that guest's food is cooked first, separately, and one of us carries it to the table.
Yes. The Hamptons and the North Fork are regular for us, as is Litchfield County. Anything more than two hours from Rhinebeck adds a travel and lodging line, which we quote up front.
Availability
Send the date, the venue and a rough count. We reply within two business days with whether the Saturday is open and a per-head range, and if it is, we hold it for a week while you decide.
