How We Got Here


We drove to Ethiopia before we bought our first roaster.

In 2016, Mara Osei and her brother Daniel spent three weeks visiting farms in Yirgacheffe. They came home with two suitcases of green samples and a pretty clear idea: most specialty roasters were buying on spec and selling the story. They wanted to work the other direction.

Compass opened in 2017 with a 12-kilo Probat and a single account at a Northeast Portland cafe. Today we run a 25-kilo Giesen, do two farm trips a year, and still hand-sort every bag before it ships. We roast to order, not to stock. If a lot sells out, it's gone until the next harvest.

The bar is open Tuesday through Saturday for pour-overs and cold brew. We don't do espresso drinks. We take coffee seriously.

Good to know

Before your first bag

We roast every Wednesday and ship Thursday. Most orders arrive within two to three days of roast. We print the exact roast date on every bag. Coffee is best between four and twenty-one days off roast.

Yes. At checkout, select whole bean, filter grind (drip, Chemex, V60), pour-over grind (medium-fine, V60, Aeropress), or French press grind (coarse). We grind to order on the same day we roast.

We ship two bags on the Thursday following each roast day. You choose which origins you want or let us rotate based on availability. Skip or pause from your account page at any time. No contracts, no minimums beyond the first order.

Direct relationships with farms and cooperatives in Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya, Peru, and Brazil. We visit each origin at least once every two years. You can read about each lot on the product page.

Yes. We work with cafes, restaurants, and offices in the Portland metro area and ship wholesale nationwide. Minimum two cases (24 bags) per order. Email us at hello@compasscoffee.com to start an account.

Let us know within seven days and we will replace it or credit your account. We have never had to argue about this. If the coffee is not right, we want to fix it.
