Why independent matters

Started here. Still here. Never moved the office.

Anchor opened in 2004 in the same Grand Avenue storefront we occupy today. Our founder, Dan Reyes, spent six years at a captive agency before realizing the problem: when you only sell one company's products, that is who you work for, not the client.

Going independent meant getting appointed with every major carrier in Minnesota. It took two years. Now when a client's home insurer raises rates by 22 percent, we pull quotes from all twelve carriers that same afternoon and call them back with the answer.

We cover auto, home, rental property, business liability, commercial auto, workers comp, and life. Most of our clients bundle two or more. We review every policy at renewal, not just when there is a complaint.

When your premium goes up, we shop the whole market that afternoon and call you back with the answer.

What we cover

Every line, every carrier, one call

Auto

Personal auto, multi-car households, high-value vehicles, and drivers with prior claims. We find the carrier that prices your specific history favorably, not the one with the loudest commercials.

Home and Renters

Homeowners, condo, rental property, and renters insurance. We match your dwelling type, replacement cost, and local risk profile to the right carrier before you pay.

Business

General liability, BOP, commercial property, commercial auto, and workers comp for small and mid-size businesses. One call, all lines.

Life

Term life, whole life, and universal life from A-rated carriers. We do not push any single product. We build a coverage amount that fits your income and obligations.

Umbrella

Excess liability coverage that sits above your auto and home policies. Most families are underinsured here. An umbrella policy typically costs less than a dinner out per month.

Rental Property

Landlord policies for single-family rentals, duplexes, and small multifamily buildings in the Twin Cities. We cover the structure, loss of rent, and your liability as a landlord.

Your agents

Licensed people, not a call center

Dan Reyes

Dan Reyes

Founder & Licensed Agent — 20 years

Dan opened Anchor after six years at a captive agency where he kept watching clients overpay at renewal because there was nothing else to offer them. He holds a Minnesota P&C license and a Life and Health license. He works the counter Tuesday through Friday and personally reviews every policy that renews above a 10 percent increase.

Maya Torres

Maya Torres

Senior Agent, Commercial Lines — 11 years

Maya handles all business accounts and commercial auto. Before joining Anchor she spent four years underwriting small business policies at a regional carrier, which means she knows exactly what the underwriters look at when pricing your account. She has placed business policies with six of our twelve carriers.

Kevin Larson

Kevin Larson

Agent, Personal Lines — 7 years

Kevin focuses on auto, home, and umbrella for personal accounts. He grew up in South Minneapolis, which means he understands the housing stock and the specific carriers that underwrite older homes in the metro well. He also handles most of our renters and condo inquiries.

Client stories

What happens when your agent actually shops the market

My home insurer raised my rate by $480 at renewal. I called Anchor and they had a lower quote from a different carrier on the same coverage within a few hours. That is exactly what an independent agent is supposed to do.
Rachel M.
Minneapolis homeowner, 8 years with Anchor
I have three rental properties and a commercial van. Dan handles all of it under one renewal review each year. I have not had to shop insurance myself since 2016.
Jose P.
Landlord and contractor, St. Paul
We moved our business policy to Anchor after our previous broker could not explain why our premium went up 30 percent two years in a row. Maya found us a better rate with better coverage limits. Wish we had switched sooner.
Linda and Tom S.
Restaurant owners, Uptown Minneapolis

Common questions

How independent agencies work

We are not employees of any insurance company. We hold agency appointments with multiple carriers, which means we can legally shop and bind policies from all of them. When you call a captive agent like State Farm or Allstate, they can only offer you that one company's products. We compare twelve.

We are appointed with Progressive, Travelers, Nationwide, The Hartford, Bristol West, Acuity, Auto-Owners, IMT, West Bend, GAINSCO, Employers, and Chubb. The right carrier depends on your risk profile, not which one runs the most ads.

At every renewal, and any time something significant changes: you buy a home, get married, add a driver, start a business, or your income changes. We contact every client before their renewal date to review. You do not have to remember to call us.

Yes. We do not file the claim for you, but we walk you through the process, help you understand what your policy covers, and advocate on your behalf if the carrier's settlement offer looks low. We stay involved until it closes.

No. You cancel your existing policy, you receive a prorated refund for the unused premium, and your new policy begins the same day. We coordinate the timing so there is no gap in coverage. Most clients do it in one phone call with us.

No. We are compensated by the carriers through agency commissions, which are built into the premium you pay regardless of whether you use an agent or buy direct. Using an independent agent costs you nothing extra and gives you access to market comparison you would not have otherwise.

Bank-placed coverage, also called force-placed insurance, is almost always more expensive and narrower in coverage than a policy you choose yourself. It protects the lender's interest, not yours. We recommend reviewing it and replacing it with a policy that actually fits your situation.

Free policy review

Bring your current policy. We will tell you if you are overpaying.

No obligation. We compare your current coverage against the market in about 20 minutes. Most clients find at least one gap or a better rate. Sometimes both.
