04: Tips
Use a plunger or a $10 drain snake for a single slow drain. If multiple drains are sluggish at the same time, or you hear the toilet gurgle when you run the sink, that points to a main-line issue, not a trap blockage. Stop using drain chemicals and call a plumber before the situation worsens.
Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. Watch for rust-colored water at the hot tap, rumbling or popping during the heating cycle, water pooling near the base, or consistently slower hot water delivery. If the unit is over 10 years old and showing any of these, budget for replacement rather than repair.
Older Pittsburgh homes often have plumbing on uninsulated exterior walls or in unheated crawl spaces. When temperatures drop below 20 degrees, those pipes are at risk. Disconnect garden hoses before the first hard freeze, open cabinet doors under sinks on cold nights, and locate your main shutoff valve now.
