Winter 2026 / Practice Notes

The cushion arrived from Kyoto in November, packed in tissue and stamped with the maker's red seal. I had been waiting six months. The buckwheat hull shifted the moment I sat on it and something in the angle of my pelvis changed. It is a small thing. It is the only thing I thought about for the rest of that sit.

This is the kind of attention practice develops. Not the dramatic realizations that get written about in books, but the noticing of small shifts. The quality of light on a December Tuesday at 6:47 in the morning. The difference between held breath and settled breath. The sound the pine floor makes under bare feet in winter.

Mu Practice has been here on NW 23rd for seven years. We have twelve mats, six classes a week, and a room with windows on two sides. We have people who have been coming since the second month we opened and people who came for the first time last week. None of them came looking for a fitness program. They came looking for somewhere to be quiet in a city that is not quiet.

The door is open. Come when you are ready. There is no orientation required. Tell the teacher you are new, and she will show you where to put your shoes.

About Mu

Mu Practice opened in 2017 in a rented second-floor space above a plumbing supply shop on NW 23rd. The walls were white. The floors were pine. We put down twelve mats and waited to see who would come.

They came. Not many at first, and not the people we expected. The first regulars were not young professionals looking for a workout. They were a retired teacher, a carpenter, an ER nurse, and a man who had been practicing Zen for thirty years and wanted somewhere quiet to sit on Tuesday mornings.

We have not moved. We have not grown the room. We have not added a second location or a teacher training program or an app. We have twelve mats. We have six classes a week. We have people who have been coming for seven years and people who arrived last Tuesday.

The floor is pine. The walls are white. Twelve mats. That is enough.

From the practice

I have been practicing here since the second month it was open. Nothing has changed, which is the point.

Ruth AdeyemiSeven-year member

I went looking for a yoga class and found a meditation practice. That was five years ago. I am still here.

James PfeifferMember since 2021

The half-day sits are the most useful four hours I spend each month. Quiet, structured, no performance.

Common questions

Do I need to be Buddhist to practice here?

No. Zazen is taught in the Soto Zen tradition, but attendance carries no religious obligation. The form is what matters, not the affiliation.

What if I have never meditated before?

You are welcome. A brief orientation is offered at the door before each sitting class. Tell the teacher you are new.

How do I book a class?

Email us or call. We do not use an app or an online booking system. Someone will confirm your spot within a few hours.

Is there a membership?

We offer a monthly pass for unlimited classes and a ten-class card. Drop-in is also welcome. Pricing is on request.

Why only twelve mats?

Because the room fits twelve comfortably and we are not interested in fitting more.
